Far in distance but especially in time, due to the roads, Bragança is becoming closer, thanks to the new highways that have been constructed recently. However, the trend to go south and west obliges me to confess that I've been there only three or four times. Bragança is a beautiful site, with a well preserve roman house, and all the district looks calm, almost stopped in time, where is easy to appreciate home made specialties of all kind. |
The people is simple and nice, and its not difficult to become friend to someone. Wilder then in the western districts, Douro River also has its attractions here.

Bragança |
The most remote town in Portugal (though becoming each time more accessible, with the improvement of the roads) keeps its charm, with a well treated and preserved historic center, in a modern town. One of the most traditional areas of Portugal, Bragança is a pleasure for any Portuguese, with the grammatical correction and pure accent, that allows us to tell that this is the place where our language is more respected. Good food (usually plenty of it) and hospitality are landmarks. |
Domus Municipalis This strange building from the 12th century, almost in perfect condition (the roof was rebuilt in the last century, and I'm not too sure about the way it respects the original), is the ex-libris of Bragança. Still under discussion about its use in old days, it's easy and free to visit, inside the castle's walls. |
Podence
Caretos, from Podence
In a "lost" village of Trás-os-Montes, the young men dress strange costumes to provoke the girls with bells during the Carnival. This remote and strange tradition is kept and got curiosity and acceptance all over the country. I met them in Portalegre, animating a cultural event far from Carnival. Romeu
Romeu "is" a Restaurant. Well not exactly, Romeu is a traditional village of the northeast, with beautiful houses and a good restaurant, but, when you decide to make a picture, which is the best target for your camera? Yes, the restaurant. So, click, and up to lunch. |
Vila Flor |
This big village near Bragança shows one of the rare solutions of tiles in the church's facade. As almost all the inland villages, it is welcoming and friendly (except that sympathetic old lady that sold me a beautiful bread, older then herself - but that's another story). y visit to Vila Flor happened many years ago. In recent photos I noticed a white facade in the church. No! please don't tell me that they removed the tiles... |
